HOW TO BALAYAGE ON DARK HAIR

HOW TO BALAYAGE ON DARK HAIR

At the beginning of this year, I decided I wanted to change up my hair and go lighter – which was probably influenced by the whole ‘new year, new you’ timing!

So just to give you guys a brief background into my hair

  • I have naturally jet black hair
  • It’s typically very straight, and it doesn’t really need much maintenance
  • I have home-dyed my own hair for years

I was already medium/dark brown anyway, but I wanted to balayage my dark hair and incorporate ash blonde highlights and lowlights

| MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

I did my research and saved pictures of what I wanted on my phone, but I knew if I wanted it to look good, I would have to get it done professionally; so I decided to book a consultation with Trevor Sorbie in Manchester.

Leading upto the consultation, I saved tons of pictures of girls where they went from jet black hair to silver ash blonde in one go using this product called Olaplex.

Olaplex is suppose to be this amazing new treatment can lift hair alot better than bleach, without causing much damage to your hair – amazing right.

So I went in expecting to get the exact same results, and it’ll be super quick and easy, and I’ll be done in one session

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case

| TRUST YOUR COLOURIST

My colourist Elena told me, in order to get the colour I was looking for, it will probably take 2-3 sessions

  • The first session will really be spent lifting off all the old box dye colour that’s already in my hair
  • Leave it 5-6 weeks to rest
  • Then the next few sessions will be focused on lighting the hair gradually
  • With 5-6 weeks in between, to let my hair recover

If I’m honest, I was pretty disappointed that I wasn’t going to leave straight away with the pretty blonde hair I was after, and I did even ask, well if these girls could go from black to blonde, then why can’t I?

But Elena advised everyone’s hair takes to colour completely different to someone else’s, and she didn’t want to ruin my hair by going from one extreme to another.

Their hair might look great in the pictures, but you don’t want to be washing your hair the next week, and it’s falling to pieces

I knew she was right.

| ASK FOR OLAPLEX TO BALAYAGE ON DARK HAIR

I took these pictures yesterday, and I’ve had 2 sessions so far, with each session taking about 5 hours to do

You can really start to see hints of blonde throughout my hair, and I’m so so happy with it!

I’ve not experienced any damage to my hair at all, and I’ve not had any breakages when I’m washing it either – so I would really recommend asking for Olaplex if you do decide to balayage on dark hair

| I’D HAVE 2 MORE SESSIONS TO GO EVEN BLONDER

Each of my balayage appointments have costed me approx £100, which I thought was really good

I would say, I’d have another 2 more sessions to see how much blonder I can go, so make sure to follow me on Instagram/Twitter to keep updated on that!

Finally to summarise, here are my 3 key areas to bear in mind when you balayage on dark hair

  • Manage your expectations. You won’t get the colour you want on your first go
  • Your hair, and the way it takes to colour will be completely different to someone else’s
  • Trust your colourist. They know what’s best for your hair

Also, if you’re based in the Manchester area, I would really recommend Elena at Trevor Sorbie – she’s really really good, and she only does colour so she definitely knows her stuff! x
